چکیده

29 W e all want to change our appearance in some way. For example, makeup helps enhance appearance, although it primarily relates to the face. Many people try to change their moods by changing their accessories, clothes, and hairstyles. Some people even resort to plastic surgery to make permanent changes. We often observe behaviors that stem from a more radical desire for metamorphosis. For example, amusement parks and sightseeing areas sometimes have standing character boards of monsters or animation characters with their face areas cut out. Children and adults alike enjoy putting their faces into the cutouts and having their photographs taken (Figure 1). People simply enjoy changing their forms. People aren’t satisfied with just static metamorphosis, however. Children often pretend to act as their favorite movie heroes, monsters, and animation characters. A child’s desire for dynamic metamorphosis apparently persists into adulthood. For example, MGM Studios in Santa Monica, California, provides an attraction that lets participants (mostly adults) appear in the scenes of popular TV shows. This experience excites the participants, and the audience also enjoys watching.

4D Objects for Animation: Immersion on Virtual Reality

4D object modeling, also called space-time modeling, allows to build animations with topological modifications, like metamorphosis or implicit surfaces, with high level control. Starting from a 4D objects modeler for animation, we propose a tool to manipulate 4D objects embedded on imported scenes, running on various OS and environments. Since the perception of 4D objects is complex, we propose...

Looking into the puparium: Micro‐CT visualization of the internal morphological changes during metamorphosis of the blow fly, Calliphora vicina, with the first quantitative analysis of organ development in cyclorrhaphous dipterans

Metamorphosis of cyclorrhaphous flies takes place inside a barrel-like puparium, formed by the shrinking, hardening and darkening of the third-instar larval cuticle. The opacity of this structure hampers the visualization of the morphological changes occurring inside and therefore a full understanding of the metamorphosis process. Here, we use micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to describe th...

Generating a Population of Animated faces from Pictures

This paper describes a simple and robust method for generating photo-realistic animated face population in a virtual world. First we make a small set of 3D-virtual faces just using photo data, using a method so called virtual cloning. Then we use very intuitive 3D-morphing system to generate a new population, which is profited from 3D-structure of existing virtual faces. The virtual cloning met...

Deliverable 5.2 Creation of Population

Population of virtual humans is an essential keystone in any performance that involve a number of virtual humans cohabiting within the same virtual environment and the public. This deliverable describes a method for generating population. We first discuss cloning faces from two orthogonal pictures and then for generating populations from a small number of these clones. The problem of generating...

Circadian Robot Metamorphosis

Insects, fish, and amphibians undergo the intriguing process of metamorphosis. Metamorphic processes are governed by gene regulatory networks: complex networks of gene-protein interactions. Recent studies demonstrate the isolated use of artificial gene regulatory networks for (1) body development, (2) metamorphosis, or (3) epigenetics. We will evolve a gene regulatory network by fitness uniform...

The Virtual , Alternate Spaces , and the Effects upon Artwork

This chapter explores the philosophical notion of The Virtual in response to the writings of Gilles Deleuze and unfolds this thinking through its interdisciplinary and transformative effects upon contemporary fine art. The Virtual is discussed in relation to forms of contemporary painting, yet the chapter provides a model for thinking through interdisciplinarity within, and from, other media. T...
